More Hazel Bazemore

October 13, 2006

There were enough Swainsons Hawks, Mississippi Kites, Peregrines to peak my interest and one day two Swallow-tailed Kites came buy. It was truly amazing. I recomend it to all birders Hawkwatchers in particular. It certainly was a highlight of the season!!

How I Got Started as a Birdwatcher

October 11, 2006

I really do love birdwatching. Not to overuse a phraze, but it is my passion. I remember being home from school with a sore throat. My Mother was at work. She put out feed and water for the Cardinals, Bluejays, House Sparrows, and Black Birds of all types. Now and then a flicker would come, and a Song Sparrow inhabited the brushy areas, but now and then came out for seed.  I still remember my first Carolina Wen. It was very exciting. I could spend the entire day watching the feeder in the back, for birds, especially odd ones.

I am not known for my paitience, but I used these same finely honed skills later for bears, wolves and many secretive animals, and harder to find birds.

Hawks Everywhere

October 8, 2006

Hazel Basemore, near Corpus Christi, Texas, is without a doubt some of the best hawk watching in the world. We saw kettles of 38,000 Broadwing Hawks, and had three 100,000 hawk days in a row. It was exciting.

There were oddballs like Harlans Hawks. Whitetailed Hawks were resident, so were Groove-billed Anis and Green Kingfishers. Green Jays and Buff-bellied Hummers were right in front of us and we saw a misguided freshwater loving Reddish Egret. This year mosquitos and heat (for us northerners) was fierce, but Hawkwatch International people and volunteers are great. They mitigate the Alaskan size mosquitos and heat.

Hazel Bazemore County Park is well worth the elements, if you like hawks. Contact Joel, the team leader, or Daine of Hawkwatch, if you want to get started, or contact Hawkwatch International. You really get to see Hawkwatching in action. Patti Watts-Beasely diligently maintains the Hazel Bazemore website. Have a look at Hazel Bazemore Hawkwatch.
