Washington Post: Gulf drilling ban lifted
The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it is lifting the temporary ban on deepwater drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico, a move likely to repair one open wound in the Gulf of Mexico. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar made the announcement in a conference call with reporters, well ahead of the Nov. 30 date at which it was originally slated to expire. Many operators in the Gulf said the administration’s decision would not in itself return operations to normal. And it is likely to have a positive effect on the political fortunes of lawmakers running in the mid-term elections. But it’s not the end of the problem that has created chaos in the Gulf region. “The lifting of a moratorium doesn’t get rigs back to work,” said Jim Noe, general counsel for the drilling operator Hercules Offshore, who also serves as executive director of the Shallow Water Energy Security Coalition, an industry group. “They still have to issue permits.”
